We're currently enjoying the wonderful photography of Rich Pomerantz at Makery Coworking. Rich is a talented photographer who has been capturing images of people, products, food, farms, and more for almost 25 years.
The exhibit features photographs from several trips Rich took to Cuba dating back to 2012.
His three trips were part of a group visiting Cuba through the "People to People" program, run by the U.S. State Department. The program allowed him virtually unrestricted access to the streets, the people and their homes.
His trips took place prior to the U.S. government officially opening relations with Cuba. "The feeling on the ground was one of inevitability, given the growing numbers of Americans visiting the island, the lessening of hostility from the Obama administration, and not the least, the huge amount of money and goods flowing unofficially through the embargo from the mainland to Cuba via tourists and Cuban-Americans traveling to the island in ever-increasing numbers," says Pomerantz.
"As a photographer, the most important attribute Cuba offers is its amazing light--it has been a mecca for photographers for years," says Pomerantz. "Certainly, the beauty and dilapidated elegance of its architecture, the handsome and proud Cuban people and the intrigue of the prohibited all contribute to it being a fabulous subject to photograph."
His goal is for these images to have captured some of the energy of these times of transition while revealing the fragility of the cultural, the personal and the physical infrastructure.
The public is welcome to view the exhibit during our normal business hours (Mon. - Friday, 8:30am to 6:00pm). Makery Coworking will also be open on Small Business Saturday (November 24th, 10am - 5pm) for Pop Up Shoppery, a unique artisan pop up shop featuring 17 local vendors with lots of great holiday gift ideas.
